The UNI Campanile
I’m 80 Years Old, Celebrate with Me

Oh, the joyous moments I’ve witnessed over the past 80 years! I don’t know if it is the sweet sound of my 47 finely-tuned bells, my 101 ft. tall stately brickwork or my welcoming plaza that creates an aura of romance. But, I must admit I have started a few traditions. My favorite tradition takes place on the Friday before homecoming when couples exchange kisses at the stroke of midnight.

In the early years, I loved to sound the bells over a cold wintry campus as skaters glided across Prexy’s Pond. During the summer, I would serenade sunbathers as they splashed away the summer heat.

However, not all my memories are fond memories. In July 1965, I was awakened in the night when flames from Old Central lit the night sky. And, I’ll never forget that dark day of September 11, 2001. I chimed with grief as students, faculty and staff gathered around my foundation to find strength and encouragement after this disastrous event.

Well, as you know, I’m celebrating my 80th birthday and as often happens with aging, I’m beginning to show rust spots on my bellframe and other parts, bolts are missing from my structure and some springs need to be replaced. I could go on and on but I don’t want you to feel sorry for me. I’ve lived a good life and believe with a little TLC I have many more chimes left in me. So, I hope you’ll participate in a renovation program that will start this fall.

Click here and go to the "Other" box and fill in Campanile Renovation to give to my renovation project. And, thank you for helping me chime on.
