Great gifts mean great responsibilities
"I paid my own way through school, so I know how expensive it is to earn a degree. Unfortunately, I had one year where I was $2,000 short of what I needed to cover my bill. It might as well have been $2 million-- $2,000 was a lot of money. I was already working three jobs to pay tuition and my room/board--it seemed like a hopeless situation, and I gave serious thought to dropping out of school. A college degree just wasn't in the cards for a kid like me.
I am forever grateful to the anonymous UNI alumni who were donors to the school. Because they gave back to UNI, I was able to experience a generosity that made a difference in my life. These "giants" let me stand on their shoulders for a brief moment in time. I can assure these donors the $2,000 gift was well spent. I earned my degree and a life lesson: great gifts mean great responsibilities. I received the gift of staying in school at UNI. And, I understand my responsibility as an alum, and that's to give back to my school." Debra Blume
