New facilities make a lasting difference

Roger and Marcella '48 Olesen's gift of a music education classroom in the Gallagher-Bluedorn Performing Arts Center extends their love of music to UNI students and the community at large.

"Our families have been 'gatherers around the piano' for as long as I can remember," Roger says. "Even the youngest would play along on a toy instrument. We had grand times."

Marcella earned an education degree from UNI, pursued a secretarial career at Olesen-Simonsen Realty Co., and continues to "play piano a lot at home." Her love of music and concerts is matched by her husband, Roger, who plays the violin for his "personal satisfaction."

Growing up in the Big Band era, the Olesens recall the patriotic role of music during the World War II years.

Although Roger did not attend UNI, he has a close relationship with the University. He remembers his mother coming to campus to study classical piano. In addition, major UNI projects, such as the Strayer-Wood Theatre and the arts complex, were built by Jens Olesen and Sons Construction Co. of Waterloo. Roger retired as company president in 1989.

"The UNI School of Music has a tremendous reputation," the Olesens agree. "We're grateful we had a chance to participate in the Gallagher-Bluedorn project. It's awesome! We're sure it will have a positive impact on UNI music education and the surrounding community for a long time."
