Sayers leave $400,000 bequest to UNI Foundation

Orville and Margaret "Jane" Sayers have left an estate gift of $400,000 to the University of Northern Iowa Foundation.  Their gift will support an endowed scholarship in their name for students from Belle Plaine Community High School and Benton Community High School to attend UNI.

Jane Sayers earned a Bachelor of Science degree in 1937 from Iowa State Teacher’s College (now UNI) and a master's degree from the University of Colorado. She taught high school in several Iowa towns including Belle Plaine.  She also taught summer school at the University of Colorado. She died March 27, 2008. Orville Sayers also earned a Bachelor of Science degree in 1937 from ISTC. He was a retired science teacher and coach. He died in 1999.

Bill Calhoun, vice president of University Advancement, said, "We are honored to receive this gift from Orville and Jane Sayers. The Sayers valued education, and their generosity will make it possible for future generations of students to attend UNI."

The Sayers' gift is part of the $150 million Imagine the Impact Campaign for the University of Northern Iowa. The campaign focuses on scholarships, faculty and program support. For more information, visit www.uni-foundation.org.
